Public Invited to Participate in Tree Planting Event on April 23
In honor of America’s 250th anniversary, the Guernsey County Commissioners and the Cambridge/Guernsey County Visitors & Convention Bureau will host a special Heritage Tree Planting Ceremony on April 23, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at 274 Highland Ave., Cambridge (behind Children’s Services). The public is invited to attend this event, which will mark the planting of a native Ohio white oak tree, part of the state’s broader effort to create a lasting environmental legacy through tree planting. Parking is limited with a few spots available at Children’s Services, but additional parking is conveniently located across the street from the Guernsey County Health Department.
The tree planting is part of the America 250-Ohio initiative, which is offering a native white oak to each Ohio county as a tribute to the nation’s 250th birthday. This initiative, titled Heritage Trees: Planting History, aims to honor Ohio’s past, shape its present, and secure its environmental future by planting trees that serve as living monuments to the state’s history and natural heritage.
The white oak was chosen for its historical significance and adaptability across Ohio’s diverse landscapes. The trees, which are native to Ohio and have long been a symbol of the state’s forests, will help conserve and enhance local ecosystems while providing a legacy for future generations.
The white oak tree will be planted in partnership with the Guernsey County Commissioners Dave Wilson, Jack Marlin and Bill Cowgill and the City of Cambridge Tree Commission and will help continue Guernsey County’s tradition of honoring its environment and history.
Guernsey County America 250-Ohio liaison Commissioner Cowgill explains, “ During the history of Ohio’s forests, trees have played a critical role in the state’s environmental and cultural history. It is important for us to participate in the conservation efforts in the face of industrialization and urbanization. As part of the America 250-Ohio initiative, this planting will reflect the state’s ongoing efforts to reforest and conserve its natural resources.”
About Heritage Trees: Planting History for America 250 Ohio:
In partnership with the Ohio Division of Forestry and local communities, Heritage Trees: Planting History is a statewide project to plant native white oaks in each of Ohio’s counties, symbolizing both a tribute to the past and a forward-looking commitment to the environment. The trees will be planted in cities across the state, chosen in collaboration with local officials, and the project is supported by presenting sponsor Cenovus Energy.
The white oak was selected for its ability to thrive in diverse soil types, resistance to most tree diseases, and its deep connection to Ohio’s natural heritage. Trees will be sourced from reputable Ohio tree nurseries to ensure their sustainability and health.
