Faith played an important role in the lives of the early settlers who made their way into this corner of Ohio. As communities grew, churches became places of worship and centers of community life. Today, those historic churches and faith-filled experiences offer an inspiring glimpse into the traditions, architecture, and stories that shaped Guernsey County, Ohio.
Day One
Explore downtown Cambridge. Step inside one of several historic churches for a closer look at its architecture, traditions and place in the community. Churches available for tours include:
- Christ Lutheran Church
- St. John’s Episcopal Church
- Seventh Street United Church
- Unity Presbyterian Church
- St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church

Enjoy lunch at a locally owned restaurant before spending the afternoon exploring the shops, boutiques and historic architecture of downtown Cambridge.
After dinner, experience the story of Christ at The Living Word Outdoor Drama(open seasonally mid-June through mid-September on Friday evenings only), Ohio’s only outdoor passion play. Set against a spectacular 400-foot panoramic stage, the moving production brings the life and ministry of Christ to the stage through live actors, animals and dramatic storytelling. A special backstage experience is also available.
Day Two
Continue your journey in nearby New Concord with a guided driving tour of Muskingum University, one of Ohio’s oldest private colleges. Founded as a Presbyterian college, the university has a rich history of faith and education. Perched atop three hills overlooking the historic National Road, its “Long Magenta Line” includes notable alumni such as William Rainey Harper, Agnes Moorehead and John Glenn.
Wrap up your journey with a visit to the National Road & Zane Grey Museum, where exhibits explore the National Road’s history, the life and work of author Zane Grey, and Ohio art pottery.
