As America prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of its independence this year, Ohio is stepping boldly back in time—honoring the courage, sacrifice and stories that helped shape a nation. Across the state, a powerful initiative is bringing history to life: The Revolutionary War Veterans Graves Project.
Through this meaningful collaboration, local chapters of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) and Sons of the American Revolution are working to identify, document, and map the final resting places of an estimated 7,000 Revolutionary War patriots buried throughout Ohio. It’s more than a project—it’s a chance to rediscover the people behind the history and ensure their legacies are never forgotten.
Right here in Guernsey County, that legacy runs deep. With 21 marked Revolutionary War graves across 13 cemeteries, our community plays an important role in preserving these stories. On Saturday, June 6, 2026, the Anna Asbury Stone Chapter NSDAR will host a special graveside ceremony at Leatherwood Cemetery in Salesville. Beginning at 10:00 a.m., the ceremony will honor Revolutionary War patriot Christopher Brill with the dedication of a new tombstone—a powerful tribute connecting past and present.
And the commemorations don’t stop there.
Join us for a moving morning of remembrance as we honor two additional Revolutionary War soldiers—Thomas Bay of Cumberland and David Findley of New Concord. This unique event will feature ceremonies at two separate locations, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a light breakfast and continuing through 12:30 p.m. Guests will experience a full ceremonial program including a processional, invocation, plaque unveilings, wreath laying, music, guest speakers, an honor guard, gun salute, taps and a closing recessional. The morning will conclude with an optional lunch at Georgetown Vineyard.
RSVP is requested. For more information, please email or call 954-525-6767.
These events offer a rare and meaningful opportunity to stand where history lives, reflect on the sacrifices made for our freedom and be part of a once-in-a-generation commemoration.
