Guernsey County: A Legacy of Heritage & Growth

Founded in 1810, Guernsey County takes its name from the Isle of Guernsey, the homeland of early settlers who brought their pioneering spirit to Ohio’s frontier. Nestled along key routes like Zane’s Trace and the National Road, the area quickly grew from dense forest to a thriving hub of coal mining, glassmaking and commerce.

Today, Guernsey County blends rich history with small-town charm—home to historic sites, scenic parks and cultural attractions like the National Museum of Cambridge Glass and Dickens Victorian Village. As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, Guernsey County proudly honors its past while welcoming visitors to be part of its continuing story.

Housed in an 1890s-era brownstone, the Guernsey County History Museum features 17 rooms filled with local artifacts, period furnishings and historic exhibits—including a one-room schoolhouse and a replica of a coal mine. It’s a fascinating look at the people and industries that shaped Guernsey County.

Follow the path of Confederate cavalry raider John Hunt Morgan through Guernsey County during his daring 1863 raid into Ohio. Interpretive markers trace his route through the area  where Union forces and local citizens played key roles in slowing his escape. It’s a compelling glimpse into Civil War history—right where it happened.

Step into the shimmering legacy of one of America’s finest glassmakers. The National Museum of Cambridge Glass showcases over 10,000 pieces produced by the renowned Cambridge Glass Company (1902–1958). Discover the artistry, craftsmanship and local pride behind the glass that once graced tables around the world—right here in Cambridge, Ohio.

Travel the route that helped build a nation. The National Road, America’s first federally funded highway, runs through the heart of Guernsey County—linking early pioneers, commerce and communities. Today, this All-American, National Scenic Byway invites visitors to explore charming towns, historic architecture and the enduring spirit of westward expansion.

A striking centerpiece of downtown Cambridge, the Guernsey County Courthouse was completed in 1883 and features beautiful Second Empire architecture. Its clock tower and detailed stonework reflect the county’s pride and prosperity—and during the holidays, it comes alive with a dazzling light show that draws visitors from near and far.


Carrying on Cambridge’s rich glassmaking tradition, Mosser Glass has been producing handmade art glass since 1971. As the only pressed glass factory in the United States, Mosser blends time-honored techniques with vibrant, modern designs. Visitors can take a free factory tour and watch skilled artisans bring this timeless craft to life.

A visit to the area isn’t complete without a stop at one of Cambridge’s most beloved institutions, Kennedy’s Bakery. For more than 100 years, Kennedy’s Bakery has been known for its traditional baked goods and old-fashioned recipes. Passed down through generations, this family-run bakery continues to serve the community with fresh breads, pastries and nostalgic flavors that celebrate Guernsey County’s hometown charm.
